Patterns for Graphics FMP.

Here i'm looking at patterns i can make using strips of printed Modern no. 20 text. I'm still unsure if im going to use printed fabric on the actual skirt, but want to experiment a bit before i decide.

Paper Dress, graphics FMP experiment

before settling on my final design and making it with fabric, im looking at construction methods using paper. i kept to the design i liked the most from the 3 i'd sketched and wanted to make the dress look as good as possible, with few visable staples and sellotape. this proved difficult as the skirt is full of rolled up paper to give it shape. ive left a hole in the skirt to show the paper underneath.
the dress has a proper zip down the back, and includes elements of pleats, tucks, crossed over paper and it is also tailored to fit me exactly.
its not quite finished, but will post more images when its done, and of me wearing it.

first sketches of new illustration project, A Turn Of Phrase. illustrating old phrases in a contemporary way. my first idea was to draw the old meaning but now i want to look at print and showing the phrases in their literal manner.

this is a sketch from my 'past' sketchbook. i based it on memories and photos from childhood and last summer. this is a montage of friends from a night out. will upload more when i scan them in.

over christmas we had a brief to complete three sketchbooks, with the themes of Past present and future. above are my favourite pages from the Future book. I imagined a planet overrun with aliens and strange landscapes, the aliens are supermodels heads on snail/rabbit bodies and the landscapes are made up of expensive jewellery and diamonds. i liked the idea of mixing the futuristic emements with a retro style, the landscapes look like theyre from the Jetsons.

Illustration catch up

The final project of semester A was to chose an obsession, taking inspiration from artists in the Tate gallery who show their obsessions in their work and lifestyle. we created a series of drawings, whatever size of quantity we liked, and make a book. I love vintage clothes and fabrics, so looked at ages of clothing and textiles. Layering watercolour, biro, pencil and ink for the image and scanning them in. Because id ordered the other two books i wanted to do something different for this one, so since my obsession is vintage fabrics i made each page from material. i laminated the scanned pages and sewn them onto the fabric, using a running stich in black thread to show each mark. i made a front and back page from the material and have used an open-ended zip to close the booklet up. I've also made a doll out of modroc, in the same style as the girls are drawn in the book. I like how ive put more of my personality into this project, the method and doll were more fun to do than just ordering a book from the internet.












Our second project of semester A was to chose an image, from a choice of 5, to base a story on. the story was to focus on light and dark, and the chosen image would be the 6th in a series of 11 images. I chose a picture of Vivienne Westwood celebrating after a runway show. I wanted to look at joy and sorrow, and thought showing a supermodels career would be interesting. She starts as a baby and is nurtured, and gradually grows up, becomes a model, then after the runway show she grows older and eventually dies. Vivienne is always there, she never ages, but she is always teaching her and watching over her. I called it the Cycle of a Models Life.
The style in which the final book was drawn is different from my first idea, which was less stylised and more like a kids book. the idea wasnt working so i changed the style, and added the splashes of black ink which give the images depth and interest.




























our first project was to sketch 1000 images over two weeks, anything from what you're eating, watching, doing, peoples faces, stuff in your head, animals, ideas... anything. we looked over our 1000 images and selected our 25 personal favourites, and created a book of them.
i drew alot of take away coffee cups because during the project i was travelling between London and Milton Keynes alot, so saw alot of them. I liked the simple lines and pop-art style, so made two canvasses with different colour backgrounds. I really like the yellow one. i'm very happy with the book, all the images i chose were black line on white paper, which is how i work mostly, and it gives the book a nice theme and makes it appear tidier, dispite the sketches all being quite slap-dash.
