Illustration catch up

The final project of semester A was to chose an obsession, taking inspiration from artists in the Tate gallery who show their obsessions in their work and lifestyle. we created a series of drawings, whatever size of quantity we liked, and make a book. I love vintage clothes and fabrics, so looked at ages of clothing and textiles. Layering watercolour, biro, pencil and ink for the image and scanning them in. Because id ordered the other two books i wanted to do something different for this one, so since my obsession is vintage fabrics i made each page from material. i laminated the scanned pages and sewn them onto the fabric, using a running stich in black thread to show each mark. i made a front and back page from the material and have used an open-ended zip to close the booklet up. I've also made a doll out of modroc, in the same style as the girls are drawn in the book. I like how ive put more of my personality into this project, the method and doll were more fun to do than just ordering a book from the internet.

Our second project of semester A was to chose an image, from a choice of 5, to base a story on. the story was to focus on light and dark, and the chosen image would be the 6th in a series of 11 images. I chose a picture of Vivienne Westwood celebrating after a runway show. I wanted to look at joy and sorrow, and thought showing a supermodels career would be interesting. She starts as a baby and is nurtured, and gradually grows up, becomes a model, then after the runway show she grows older and eventually dies. Vivienne is always there, she never ages, but she is always teaching her and watching over her. I called it the Cycle of a Models Life.
The style in which the final book was drawn is different from my first idea, which was less stylised and more like a kids book. the idea wasnt working so i changed the style, and added the splashes of black ink which give the images depth and interest.

our first project was to sketch 1000 images over two weeks, anything from what you're eating, watching, doing, peoples faces, stuff in your head, animals, ideas... anything. we looked over our 1000 images and selected our 25 personal favourites, and created a book of them.
i drew alot of take away coffee cups because during the project i was travelling between London and Milton Keynes alot, so saw alot of them. I liked the simple lines and pop-art style, so made two canvasses with different colour backgrounds. I really like the yellow one. i'm very happy with the book, all the images i chose were black line on white paper, which is how i work mostly, and it gives the book a nice theme and makes it appear tidier, dispite the sketches all being quite slap-dash.

Personal Project

This was the original idea I came up with, with a rough outline of the project I wanted to do. To promote a charity fund raiser appealing to females of my age, especially students. I focused too much on the purpose of the brief than the product that i'm making, which delayed me.
One idea I had and really liked was have a kitsch 50s/60s theme, with Vargas pin-up girls or housewives on the image as the fund-raiser was to swap vintage and thrift clothing, and the two themes have a strong association. I left most of the tutorials feeling confused about my project, and the design definitely reflects this;

this is the final poster design, i was really unhappy with the outcome. from my initial idea it had got far too messy and i was confused with what direction i wanted it to go in. I like the overlapping collage of cut-out girls but thats the only part i like. the ideas i had throughout the project got muddled and the resulting product really didnt live up to my own expectations.

After I presented my work infront of the class, Pete said to work on the idea over christmas and make it more personal to me, as the old design didnt reflect me or my work atall. I kept the kitsch and cheeky theme, with the title and retro colour and design (the light pink and squares are quite 50s/60s). i cut up Vogue and Elle magazines to make a different kind of collaged image. I wanted to keep with the idea of two girls in a bedroom trying on clothes and accessories, but this time it has a more edgy feel, with the collages not quite fitting together and the limbs out of proportion. i'm very happy with the image and think it goes well with the text and colour. it stands out on a white background, and i'm much more happy with this second design than the first. I think i learnt alot from this project, to stop listening to conflicting advice/criticism and produce something i really love, because in the end it's my own work and i want to be proud of something i'm presenting. I'm definitely considering this when going into my FMP.

Almanac Oct 2009

This almanac project is a way to show off our talents and personality to a potential client. within the 16 pages we had to show what we do, how we do it, and also project a sense of self. Pete mentioned seeing our minds as a factory, and what it can produce. but i see my own mind as a creative grandmas bunaglow, as i generally shy away from technology and like hand-made items and collage. my almanac had pages (or walls) of old wallpaper, and boxes (antique frames) to show my work, inspiration, and images relating to what i was saying. i made my own type, each individual letter cut out by hand and it was all assembled with pritt stick and scanned in to print.
I really like my almanac, i achieved what i wanted, and think it shows me and what i can do well. the only thing i'd change is that i didnt get to print professionally, or on recycled paper. time got the better of me but i still made the alamac myself, a slight fall before the finish line but i'm still very pleased with this project.
